Akada Software, Inc. | Using DanceWorks on 64-bit Versions of Windows

Why Doesn't DanceWorks Print Correctly in 64-bit Versions of Windows Vista and Windows 7?

The current (and previous) versions of DanceWorks were designed to run on Windows XP and earlier versions of Windows. Because of a fundamental change Microsoft implemented in its 64-bit versions of Microsoft Windows Vista and Microsoft Windows 7, DanceWorks is unable to access its report printing files in the Windows file structure when the User Account Control is turned on.

Is There a Way I can Print From DanceWorks in Windows 64-bit Systems?

DanceWorks version 5.7 will automatically detect that you are using a 64-bit system and, instead of printing reports it will export them to a Rich Text Format file on your desktop (called DanceWorks.RTF). From there, you may open the file in Microsoft Word or, if you do not have and do not want to purchase Microsft Word, from the word processor distributed with OpenOffice, a free, open source soltion distributed by Sun Microsystems (available for download here).

If you would rather print directly from DanceWorks version 5.7, you are welcome to try our printing workaround. Our customers have had success (with some exceptions) implementing this fix. It requires that you first disable your Microsoft User Account Control (see below for Akada Software, Inc.'s policy on this). Then, follow these steps:

  • Exit out of DanceWorks
  • Download and install the latest DanceWorks version 5.7 Update
  • Open the DanceWorks folder in Windows
  • Doubleclick on the file "dww64.exe" to run the fix
  • Open and log in to DanceWorks using the username ADMIN and your ADMIN password
  • Go to Setup System and choose the Credit Card/Printer tab
  • At the bottom of the screen, change the dropdown box under "Report Printing Options" to read "Print Reports"
  • Exit fully from DanceWorks and, upon logging in, you should be able to print directly from DanceWorks

What if I am Using a DanceWorks Network License?

Unfortunately, if any of the computers in your network use a Windows 64-bit operating system, our printing workaround will only allow the computer you have designated as the server to print. In this case, it is best to continue using the exporting solution noted above.

How is Akada Software Addressing This Problem?

We certainly do not expect you to put up with this solution for much longer.By the end of 2010, we will be releasing a new version of DanceWorks, designed to work as well on Windows 64-bit operating systems as it does on all other Windows operating systems. This will include full printing ability without the need to export reports or run any fixes.

We understand that this is a frustrating problem and that our solution is not perfect. We truly appreciate your patience while we resolve this issue and rest assured that we are working as hard as we can to provide you with a better user experience.

What is the User Account Control?

The Microsoft Windows User Account Control is a security feature Microsoft introduced in Windows Vista and continues to use in Windows 7. The User Account Control allows you to specify when Windows alerts you to a change that is about to occur on your system. Because the User Account Control may affect the security of your system, Akada Software, Inc. cannot advise you on whether or how to disable this feature.
